Supported Documents

Misfora can automatically read machine-readable identity and travel documents using OCR and MRZ recognition. It supports passports, national identity cards, residence permits and other documents containing an ICAO-compliant machine-readable zone (MRZ).

The supported document formats depend on the document type and its MRZ structure. Misfora currently supports TD1 and TD3 documents — covering the two MRZ layouts used across national ID cards, residence permits and passports worldwide.

What documents can Misfora scan?

Misfora reads four broad categories of machine-readable document. Each one is described below with its MRZ format — for the full list of countries and territories Misfora has been tested against, see the coverage table.

Passports

Misfora supports machine-readable passports with a TD3 MRZ, the standard format used by most modern passports. The MRZ contains the holder's name, passport number, nationality, date of birth, sex and document expiration date.

National ID Cards

Misfora supports machine-readable national identity cards using the TD1 format. TD1 cards contain a three-line MRZ and are used by many countries for national identity documents.

Currently supported examples include: Albania, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Estonia, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, Vietnam — see the full country-by-country table below.

Residence Permits

Misfora can read machine-readable residence permits when they contain a supported MRZ format, including TD1. This is especially relevant for Misfora's core use case, since hotel and short-term-rental check-in often involves guests presenting a residence permit rather than a passport.

Other Machine-Readable Travel Documents

Misfora can also recognize other ICAO-compliant machine-readable travel and identity documents, including supported refugee travel documents and crew member documents — any document containing a supported ICAO-compliant MRZ, regardless of the issuing program.

Supported MRZ formats

Misfora currently supports two ICAO Doc 9303 machine-readable zone layouts. TD2 documents are not currently supported.
